Islay is the southernmost of the Inner Hebrides islands, off the West coast of Scotland and lies to the West of the island of Jura, Islay is best known for its single malt whiskies. Nine distilleries produce the island’s characteristically peaty single malts with wonderful names such as Laphroaig, Bowmore, Lagavulin, Bruichladdich and Bunnahabhain.
In the northeast, two islands on Loch Finlaggan are dotted with the remains of an ancient settlement, including a prehistoric fort and medieval tombstones.
In the southwest tip of Islay a monument was built in 1920 to commemorate the loss of two ships in 1918 transporting American troops, the Tuscania and the Otranto It is named the American Monument and built on behalf of the American Red Cross, The monument and the location overlooks the very spot where the Tuscania sunk
