Neil Zevnik Victorian Amethyst Crystal Grape Motif Sash Brooch 1880's
Offered here is a Victorian gold-washed sash brooch in a nature-centric design from the 1880s. The Victorian artists and designers often looked to nature for the subjects of their art, and this intricately-fashioned sash brooch is a perfect example.
There is an undulating wide framework that is open in the center and curved at the edges; it is decorated with embossed water lily blooms and buds on tall stalks. A ribbon runs around the edge of the frame and gathers into Greek key figures at the center bottom. The open center of the platform is surmounted by a three-dimensional design of grapes and leaves, accented with an off-set large faceted amethyst crystal, open-back and prong-set.
The original hinged pin-bar and curved c-clasp are sturdy and secure. Sash pins were all the rage in the Victorian period, and yet eminently practical; the voluminous folds of the clothing, and especially their intricate folded and twisted sashes, required an anchor to keep them in place.
The decorative arts of the period found some of their most creative and lavish expressions in these sash pins, and this one is particularly evocative and satisfying.
