illy caffè – The Art of the Perfect Cup of Coffee

Our story begins in 17th century Trieste, on Italy’s Adriatic coast, where coffee first entered Europe and made its way to continental capitals including Vienna, Budapest and Paris. Here, the intelligentsia gathered in coffeehouses giving rise to the modern coffee culture we know and love today. In 1933 Francesco Illy established his family’s coffee business, now in its third generation, in Trieste where it has been roasting its singular blend of coffee ever since. Today the family tree extends from Francesco’s direct descendants to encompass everyone whose lives are touched by illy caffè — growers, colleagues and coffee lovers through a sustainable value system committed to caring for this extended family and making lives better on every branch.

The company’s strategy is simple – an obsession with quality. Rather than offering a wide range of different beans, illy caffè prefers to offer its greatest coffee to the world in one outstanding blend of nine types of pure Arabicaselected from the top 1% of beans, so that coffee connoisseurs everywhere can enjoy that perfect cup.

A Passion for Science and Innovation

1934 - The first pressurized packaging just one year after the company’s founding.  By adding inert nitrogen gas under pressure, an oxygen-free environment forms as illycans are sealed, preserving essential aromas and promoting mingling of coffee’s naturally occurring oils.

1935 – Francesco Illy invents the illetta, precursor to today’s espresso machine

1974 – Single serve (E.S.E) espresso pods

2008 – ‘iperespresso’ a revolutionary exclusive capsule system that extracts coffee in two distinct phases to produce an authentic espresso with a remarkably rich, velvety and long-lasting crema – at the touch of a button.

Retail Czar offers a full selection of illy caffè coffee machines that make it super simple for both coffee neophytes and budding baristas to brew the perfect cup of coffee, espresso, latte or cappuccino in the comfort of their own home. The machines themselves are icons of modern Italian design, and a wonderful addition to the ambience of any kitchen.

Commitment to Sustainability & Quality

Over 25 years ago, the company pioneered the direct trade model
by developing meaningful, long-lasting relationships with the growers. This virtuous circle allows for cultivation of the finest quality beans for which growers are provided a healthy profit when purchased by illy caffè, allowing farmers to sustainably reinvest. illy’s educational institution, Universita Del Caffè, teaches growers critical skills, techniques, and innovations in sustainability - at no cost.

These initiatives are essential to the success of all involved—not just because they are the right thing to do, but also because they result in harvesting beans of unsurpassed quality to continually deliver the perfect cup.  For the past 8 years, illy as been recognized by Ethisphere as one of the World’s Most Ethical Companies for advancing the standards of ethical business practices.

The Sensory Pleasure of Coffee & Art

At illy caffè, coffee itself is an art. Even the humble coffee cup has been transformed into an icon of design by renowned architect and designer Matteo Thun. Since 1992 it has been used as a canvas for masterpieces by Jeff Koons, Julian Schnabel, Robert Rauschenberg and James Rosenquist (who designed the logo in 1996), as well as collabs with over 100 more of the world’s foremost contemporary artists.
